Practical lessons from over 35 years in shipping—for better decisions before they become costly mistakes.
By K. Srinivas Patnaik
Every vessel has a story.
Behind every successful voyage are hundreds of decisions—technical, commercial, operational and financial. While many of those decisions quietly contribute to success, a single poor decision can lead to unnecessary cost, delays, disputes, operational challenges or even the failure of an otherwise promising venture.
After spending more than three decades at sea and ashore, I have come to realise that most costly mistakes are not caused by a lack of effort. They are often the result of incomplete information, assumptions that go unchallenged, or decisions made without sufficient clarity.
The 7 Costly Mistakes Ship Owners Make was written to help ship owners and maritime professionals recognise those mistakes before they occur.
It is not an academic textbook.
It is a practical guide built on experience.
About the Book
Owning and operating ships has never been more demanding.
Volatile freight markets, increasing regulatory requirements, environmental expectations, rising operating costs and evolving technologies mean that every important decision carries greater consequences than ever before.
Drawing upon over 35 years of experience across sea service, technical management, fleet operations, ship acquisitions, inspections, vessel valuations and maritime advisory, this book explores seven mistakes that repeatedly surface throughout the industry.
These are not theoretical concepts.
They are practical observations gathered through years of working with ship owners, managers, classification societies, financiers, brokers, charterers and technical teams.
Each chapter examines one costly mistake, explains why it occurs, and offers practical perspectives that can help readers make better-informed decisions.
Why This Book Matters
Many people believe that costly mistakes happen during vessel operations.
In reality, they often begin much earlier.
They begin
- During the purchase of a vessel.
- During technical evaluations.
- During management appointments.
- During negotiations.
- During assumptions that were never properly tested.
The objective of this book is not to tell readers what to do.
Its purpose is to encourage better thinking before commitment.
One principle has guided my professional life:
Clarity Before Commitment
Because better clarity leads to better decisions.
And better decisions lead to safer, more sustainable and more profitable operations.

From the Book to Practical Advisory
The ideas shared in this book were not developed in isolation.
They are drawn from real situations encountered over more than three decades in shipping—at sea, in technical management, during vessel acquisitions, ship management assignments, commercial negotiations and maritime advisory engagements.
While the book presents practical principles that readers can apply independently, every ship, organisation and transaction presents its own unique circumstances.
For that reason, I also work with ship owners, investors and maritime organisations who seek an independent perspective before making important technical or commercial commitments.
Whether the decision involves acquiring a vessel, appointing a ship manager, evaluating technical risks, assessing commercial viability or reviewing operational challenges, the objective remains the same:
To improve the quality of decisions before they become costly mistakes.
My advisory approach is built around one guiding principle:
Clarity Before Commitment
It is not about adding complexity.
It is about bringing experience, structured thinking and practical judgement to decisions that can have long-term operational and commercial consequences.
Maritime Advisory Areas
I currently provide independent advisory support in areas including:
- Vessel acquisition and pre-purchase sanity checks
- Desktop vessel assessments and valuations
- Technical and commercial due diligence
- Ship management selection and review
- Sale & Purchase advisory
- Strategic maritime guidance for owners and investors
- Independent second opinions on major maritime decisions
Every engagement begins with understanding the decision—not selling a service.
If a conversation helps someone avoid an expensive mistake, it is already worthwhile.
